In the world of board games, Monopoly has always been a lesson in economics. From real estate to railroad mergers, the game has taught us about the benefits of ownership and the value of strategic assets. But now, a special edition of Monopoly is offering a new lesson: the challenges of making things in the USA. The WS Game Company, a producer of high-end board games, decided to try and build a custom Monopoly game in the United States to sidestep President Trump's tariffs. CEO Jonathan Silva's experiment almost didn't pass go due to the difficulty of finding American manufacturers for the game's components. Despite his efforts, Silva had to settle for imported dice and struggled to find domestic suppliers for the rest of the game's pieces. The process took over a year and cost at least double what it would have been in China, where most of the company's board games are produced. This highlights the challenges of reshoring manufacturing, as the U.S. lacks the specialized factory ecosystem that China has built over decades. While it makes sense for the U.S. to manufacture strategically important products, the low prices and low profit margins of toys and games make it difficult to justify the investment. The toy industry is lobbying for a carve-out from future tariffs, but toys are competing for the tax break with other products. Silva's experience with the Made in the U.S.A. Monopoly game shows that while the U.S. is great at many things, it's not always great at making certain consumable goods. The company is now awaiting a shipment from China of about $6 million worth of games for the holiday season, and Silva is prepared to roll the dice on the tariff bill. Personally, I think this story is fascinating because it highlights the complex economic realities of global manufacturing. What makes it particularly interesting is the contrast between the U.S.'s strengths and weaknesses in manufacturing, and the challenges of reshoring. In my opinion, this story raises a deeper question about the future of global supply chains and the role of the U.S. in the global economy. From my perspective, it's a reminder that while the U.S. may be great at many things, it's not always great at making certain consumable goods, and that's OK. One thing that immediately stands out is the importance of specialized factory ecosystems in countries like China. What many people don't realize is that the U.S. lacks the same level of specialization in manufacturing, which makes it difficult to reshoring. If you take a step back and think about it, this story is a reflection of the broader trend of globalization and the challenges of reshoring manufacturing. It suggests that the future of global supply chains may be more complex and multifaceted than we realize. This raises a deeper question about the role of the U.S. in the global economy and the importance of specialized factory ecosystems in countries like China. A detail that I find especially interesting is the contrast between the U.S.'s strengths and weaknesses in manufacturing. What this really suggests is that the U.S. may need to reevaluate its approach to manufacturing and focus on building a more specialized factory ecosystem if it wants to be competitive in the global economy. In the future, I predict that we will see more companies like the WS Game Company trying to reshoring manufacturing, but the challenges they face will likely persist. The toy industry's lobbying for a carve-out from tariffs is a reflection of the broader trend of reshoring, but it's not a panacea. Instead, it's a recognition that the U.S. may need to adapt its approach to manufacturing and focus on building a more specialized factory ecosystem if it wants to be competitive in the global economy.
